Programs & Services The primary purpose of the Virginia Park Community Centre is to provide recreational,educational, employment and health and well being programs and services for the tenants living in NLHC units of the Virginia Park area. With this philosophy in mind, the Board and staff set out to achieve it's goals and objectives. Since August of 1987, the Virginia Park Community centre has offered a wide variety of programs and services to the community on a regular basis. The Centre is open on from 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday with additional programs and special events offered throughout evenings and weekends.
Rentals Here at the centre, we offer weekend rentals for birthday parties, anniversary parties, baby showers and more. We have a large activity room and a kitchen available for use. Please note that there is no smoking or alcohol permitted in or around our building. For more information please contact the centre at 579-4534.
The After School Program The turnout for this program has been outstanding and it continues to grow. We have had children filling our library to use our computers and successfully completing their homework projects. The program runs from 2:30 pm - 4:45 pm, Monday to Friday. Each day the kids have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities such as table tennis, air hockey, video games, basketball, homework club, crafts, and many more. Each child receives a snack around 3:30 pm, which is provided by the Kids Eat Smart Foundation . This program is free of charge but does require a medical form for each participant. Homework Haven Tutoring is available to students who are in grades 7-12. Help is offered Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:00-8:00pm. Free of charge.Tutors are post secondary students. Community Access Program
The computers at the Centre are available for public use from Monday through Friday from 9:00 am – 4:45 pm. Please note that the centre is closed from 12:00pm-1:00pm for lunch. The computers provide various purposes such as school work/assignments, exploring the Internet, printing, word processing, and much more. It is free of charge and our friendly staff are here to help you with any questions you may have.
Saturday Recreation Program Saturday Recreation is a program that was designed to encourage kids to take part in physical activity during their weekend. This program is held at the Virginia Park Elementary School Gym every Saturday from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm. This program is offered to youth ages 5 - 12 throughout the full 2 hours. The kids play sports such as soccer, basketball, tag, and soccer - baseball. Teen Basketball Program This program is offered on Thursday nights at Virginia Park Elementary School from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm. This is open to youth grades 7-12 . The cost is $1.00 per person. Youth Basketball On Thursday nights youth grades 4-6 can play organized basketball at Virginia Park Elementary School. Girls play from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Boys play from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm. There is no cost. Co-ed Youth Night One Friday each month we have a Co-ed Youth Night from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. It provides a chance for the youth of the community to get together and participate in various activities. Some activities may include dances, variety shows, carnivals, parties and more. The cost is $0.50. Co-ed Youth Floor Hockey Hockey is held Tuesday nights from 6:30 pm to 7:20 pm for youth grade 4-8 at Virginia Park Elementary School. Helmets, gloves and sticks are required. We have a limited amount of equipment available if needed. Cost is $0.50 per person. Healthy Baby Club The healthy baby club takes place on Wednesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:30 pm. Involved in this program is a food supplement program, pregnancy workshops, and a support group. For more information call Brighter Futures at (709) 739-8096. Adult Activity Night The centre will be offering an opportunity for adults to come to the centre to participate in various activities throughout the year. Parents and Tots This program is offered from 9:30 am to 11:30 am, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday mornings. Various activities provided by this program include arts and crafts, special guests, gym time, parent/child activities, and special occasion parties .
Summer Day Camp This program runs 8 weeks during July and August for children ages 5 to 12. During the 8 week program, children will take part in many activities and outings which are planned in advance. Some activities include Rotary Park, museums, swimming, bowling, tours, sports and theme days. There is a fee for this program, however we offer family rates. For more information contact Virginia Park Community Centre. Summer Drop-In This runs for 6 weeks and is open for youth between ages of 5 to 16. We do outings twice a week, such as swimming, mini golf, etc... and provide many on-site recreational activities, such as soccer, softball, playground, basketball, etc... Special Events Throughout the year we offer various Special Events, such as Christmas Parties, Easter Parties, Dances, Bingo, Breakfast, and much more. We will provide notices of dates and any events that will arise. Teen Night Program This program is designed to give youth opportunities to take part in fun safe activities and outings such as bowling, swimming, movies, tournaments, theme nights and presentations on important topics. Any teens ages 13-18 are welcomed.
The Pre-School Program
This program runs from September to June. Times for Pre-School are as follows: 4 years old from 9:00 am – 11:30 am Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings and from 1:00pm – 3:30pm Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons; 3 years old from 9:00 am – 11:30 am on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. 50+Quilting Group
Takes place on Tuesday afternoons from 11:30- 2:30pm. All sorts of items can be made; quilts, place-mats, table cloths etc...As well, tea and snacks are served. If you would like more information feel free to drop by the centre on Tuesdays or call 579-4534.
